Life in Rhodes Island
People's Stories
Karen and Stephen Read
|
Karen Read, 42, and her husband Stephen, 45, come from Norwich, Norfolk. She works part-time for the town council and he is a solicitor. They have three daughters, Rachel, 12, Katie, 11, and Hannah, 7. The family owns a three-bedroom house in the White Houses of Lardos residence in Lardos village. The house is newly built to traditional Greek specifications. The village has an old church and only one hotel, so there are hardly any tourists visiting. “We go every school holiday, and in February it is so peaceful -the girls love it.”
We had 60.000 pounds in savings that we put towards the purchase. The remaining balance came from increasing the mortgage on our home in Norwich . We were growing disillusioned with the performance of my husband's pension scheme, so we just diverted his monthly pension contributions into our mortgage account. It makes more sense and it is more fun for us. We found a solicitor in Rhodes to whom we gave power of attorney, dependent on him receiving a signed fax from us on an issue. In Rhodes you need a residence permit to buy property and he sorted one out for us without any problems.
The house is more of a long-term investment than an income generator. We originally intended to let it commercially, but once we moved all our furniture into the house, we started to worry about letting it to people we didn't know. Maybe we will in the future, but there's no actual need to do so at the moment. We bought a house on a new development where we could see the complete exterior and some finished interiors. I am not sure I would have bought off-plan as I'd be worried about the possible pitfalls and completion dates |
